Research - In 2005 the Peachtree
Street Project released “The Best and Worst Corporations in the Southeast for
Diversity”, a comparative study of the top 50 publicly-traded companies based
in the Southeast. The list has spurred
some organizations to improve their hiring, promotion and contracting
practices, including Newell Rubbermaid.
Education – The project hosted its
sixth annual “Creating Opportunity” event on November 3-4 featuring Dr. Cynthia
Hale, Boney James, Earthquake, as well as substantive workshops on Katrina
rebuilding and the voting rights act.
PUSH-ing for Safety – CEF as honored at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation for its
pioneering safe teen driving program. After discovering that the leading cause of teen deaths in the South is
auto collisions, UPS and The Peachtree Street Project partnered with public
schools to teach safe driving techniques to more than 4500 metro youth, using
UPS’ Five Seeing Eye Habits interactive curriculum. More than 5000 youth have been trained; teen
fatalities, while still a huge problem, are on the decline.
PUSH
Excel - Rev.
Jesse L. Jackson addressed a packed crowd at Martin Luther King, Jr. High in DeKalb county during Spring, 2006. Several hundred youngsters were registered to
vote. A district wide event is planned
for august, 2006.
One
Thousand Churches Connected – Interest and membership are steadily growing under
the leadership OTCC director Axel Adams and members Rev. Fred Gray, Dr. Barbara
King, Rev. Jasper Williams and a host of other progressive pastors. Financial literacy classes are blossoming in
congregations across the region. New
members include Pastor Kenneth Walker.
Pension Funds Inspired
by the Wall Street Project, the PSP has held a series of high level
invitation-only meetings in Atlanta
to spur improvement in the amount of business that black asset managers do with
pubic and private pension funds. The
next session is scheduled for Juen 22, 2006.
Supplier
Diversity - The Project maintains regular ties to many of
the Southeast’s major corporations and public entities, including AirTran,
Home Depot, Georgia Power Co. and others to promote utilization of a diverse
group of suppliers. Janice Mathis serves
on the Georgia Power Diversity Advisory Council.
Parent Power – The Atlanta
satellite is actively pushing the message that pupil success is predicated upon
parental involvement, especially in Athens, Georgia and in Valdosta, Georgia. These two cities, and 10 others have the dubious distinction of having one of he 12 worst schools
in the state, based upon reading scores. The PSP is working to get parents more involved and to find mentors
where parents are absent. Rev. Curtis
Thrasher has met with parents, school and court officials numerous times in Valdosta, resulting in the
reinstatement of several youngsters to school and a new outlook toward
educational success in the community. |
