Whereas, British Petroleum is an example of the gouging and greed in the oil/gas industry, exhibits patterns of racial discrimination, violates health, safety and the environmental regulations, and exerts control over elected officials through financial contributions;
Whereas, Big Oil made nearly $100 Billion in profits in 2005; and
Whereas, British Petroleum is a key multi-national player in the global energy market, had profits of $5.3 billion in the first quarter;
Whereas, Big Oil has contributed $190 million to Congressional representatives since 1990 (75% to Republicans) to make sure politicians act in the interest of Big Oil and not in the public interest;
Whereas, BP CEO Lord Browne had compensation of salary and stock options of $20 million;
Whereas, African Americans consumer about $20 billion in gas and oil, and BP controls the largest share of the African American market - 31% of some $6 billion;
Whereas, BP has about 800 gas distributors (jobbers) but ZERO African American distributors;
Whereas, BP has less than 1% African American managers worldwide and ZERO African American Senior VPs;
Whereas, BP does $16B in procurement, but less than 1/3 of 1% procurement with African American firms;
WHEREAS, BP has been found guilty of massive safety and environmental violations, including an explosion at their Texas City refinery that killed 15 workers, and their recent spill in the Alaska oil pipeline.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, THAT WE THE UNDERSIGNED:
PLEDGE to Say NO to British Petroleum and commit to direct action to drive down the price of gas and energy;
DEMAND that BP practice inclusion and stop their patterns of discrimination against people of color in hiring and employment in their top executive ranks,
DEMAND that BP open up opportunities for minority businesses in procurement, gas station ownership, and distributorships.
DEMAND an oil-free Congress that will focus on energy independence, research and development of alternative, sustainable energy sources.
DEMAND an end to tax breaks for Big Oil, a windfall profit tax on the oil and gas industry, and a cap on oil and gas prices.
