On April 1st, over 10,000 people marched in New Orleans for the right to return, and to protest the upcoming April 22 New Orleans election that could spell disaster for displaced Katrina survivors and disenfranching them in direct violation of the Voting Rights Act.
Secret voter rolls: We are threatened by a public election with private voter rolls. The Attorney General and Secretary of State will not generate and make public a new voter roll. Candidates don't know who and where the voters are; voters don't know who the candidates are and what they stand for.
Satellite voting: The state will not provide satellite polling places in cities and states where Katrina survivors now reside. This was done for Iraqis and Mexicans living in the U.S. to enable them to vote in their country's elections, but our government will not be provide this same democratic right for residents of New Orleans.
This in an election that will decide who will lead the rebuilding and reconstruction efforts, where resources are allocated, and who will shape the future of the city. It is a blatant violation of the Voting Rights Act, leaving persons dispersed outside of New Orleans disenfranchised, with unequal access to voting as those living in the city.
