Disaster and Destruction: Nine months ago Katrina unleashed its fury on New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, one of the cruelest disasters in history. A disaster leaving the people were left without food, water, rescue or relief from the government sworn to serve and protect its people. Katrina survivors demand and deserve the right to reconstruction, and first priority on jobs, job training and contracts.
Dispersed and Displaced: Left homeless and without a systematic plan for relocation, Katrina survivors are spread through 49 states in the country. Our people are left dispersed and displaced, with no plan for relocation and return. Katrina survivors demand the right to return. Dismissed: With the whole world watching, a 21st century view of poverty and despair flashed before our eyes...but the eyes of the Bush administration remained closed, and the government left its citizens without a relief, rescue or relocation plan.
Disenfranchisement: Now the greatest insult to those who suffered most, who lost their homes and who were put on planes with one way tickets to cities and states unknown, now face massive disenfranchisement in the upcoming election. We are threatened by a public election with private voter rolls. The Attorney General and Secretary of State will not provide a new voter roll that links the FEMA list of Katrina survivors to previous voter rolls.
Satellite voting: The state will not provide satellite polling places in cities and states where Katrina survivors now reside. First time voters must come back to New Orleans to vote. Absentee ballot procedures are inadequate and will leave voters disenfranchised. This is a national disgrace. It is a blatant violation of the Voting Rights Act, in an election that will decide who will lead the rebuilding and reconstruction efforts, where resources are allocated, and who will shape the future of the city.
Demand: Governor Blanco issue an executive order to put in place satellite voting places in cities and states where Katrina survivors now reside. Demand: the Secretary of State and Attorney General make public an updated voter roll.
Demand: the U.S. Department of Justice enforce the Voting Rights Act and ensure an open and fair election that provides equal access to voting for ALL voters - those living inside of New Orleans AND outside of the city and state. CALL GOVERNOR BLANCO NOW! 225-342-0991!
