Federal Government has Preeminent Authority to Regulate Immigration Matters

Please find below a state from Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr., founder and president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, regarding a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice against the State of Arizona.

"The Rainbow PUSH Coalition supports the decision of the U.S. Department of Justice and Attorney General Eric Holder to file a lawsuit against the State of Arizona for its punitive, negative and unconstitutional immigration law.

This Arizona ‘law’ attacks the very character of America and denies equal protection, undermining our lives, our liberty, and our pursuit of happiness.

Immigration is an issue that is uniquely reserved for federal law. Comprehensive immigration reform is needed now more than ever before. The federal government must quickly move to enact legislation and stem the trend of individual states acting to establish misguided immigration policies--actions they are not legally empowered to take.

President Obama’s challenge is to determine a pathway to citizenship. Comprehensive immigration reform is a test of our character; a test that measures the best in us.”
