MEDIA ADVISORY

August 18, 2017

New Time for Interfaith Rainbow PUSH News Conference: 11:30 A.M.

As white supremacists threaten more demonstrations around the country and President Trump continues to tweet his apparent support for their lost cause, Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., Rabbi Frederick Reeves, Rev. Dr. Myron F. McCoy, Olivier Komanzi, executive director of the African Chamber of Commerce, immigrant rights advocates and community activists will hold a news conference to denounce violence, bigotry and government policies that fan the flames of hate:

Friday, August 18, 2017
11:30 A.M.
Rainbow PUSH Coalition National Headquarters
930 E. 50th Street
Chicago, IL

The news conference will follow the first in a series of meetings in the coming weeks to develop a collective public response and strategy to protect the civil rights African Americans, Latinos, immigrants, women and the LGBTQ community fought so hard for over the last half century.

The group will also pay tribute to Heather Heyer, the 32-year-old woman, who was killed last Saturday in Charlottesville when an alleged white supremacist plowed his car into a crowd of anti-racist demonstrators.

“She died trying to heal the wounds of the country,” Rev. Jackson said.

Rev. Jackson will call for the immediate removal from public spaces symbols of “hate and hurt” such as Confederate monuments and the Balbo column in Chicago gifted to the city by fascist dictator Benito Mussolini.

“There are no statues of Hitler in Germany,” Rev. Jackson said. “There are no Nazi flags flying from government buildings. Robert E. Lee was a traitor. His statue should be taken down and replaced with a statue of Heather Heyer.”
