"Bridging Memory to Mandate: From Minneapolis to Selma”

In Chicago, DC, Minneapolis, and other cities, we are witnessing militarized streets, shuttered schools, families ripped apart by ICE raids, food insecurity, free speech silenced in the public square, and gun violence--all perpetrated by our government through mass arrests without trial.
The tactics they use are violence, fear, and oppression, but the battleground is citizenship. These are the same rights and citizenship for which John Lewis bled; Amelia Boynton was beaten unconscious defending; that drove Dr. King and an interfaith coalition across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965 — and that Frederick Douglass and Ida B. Wells fought for a century before, when Black Americans emerged from slavery only to face another war for recognition as full human beings.
So on March 6-8, a stalwart coalition is returning to the sacred ground of Selma for the 61st anniversary of the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. There, we will unite our 1965 struggle for citizenship and the right to vote with the struggle for citizenship our immigrant communities are fighting for now.
From the Midway Blitz to Operation Metro Surge to that blood-stained Alabama bridge, one thread connects our past to our present pain: the relentless fight against voter suppression and government overreach. And because history doesn't repeat, but rather rhymes with a vengeance; this won’t just serve as remembrance but also as resistance.
Let us meet this moment with full force and moral clarity.
