"FREEDOM REQUIRES PARTICIPATION: FROM HAITI TO THE BALLOT BOX"
Join us this Saturday, August 22, at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition for a special edition of the Saturday Morning Forum as we commemorate the Haitian Revolution and its enduring legacy of freedom, resistance and self-determination.
The Haitian Revolution changed the course of history and demonstrated what is possible when people stand together in pursuit of freedom and human dignity. As we reflect on that extraordinary struggle for liberation, we will connect its lessons to the responsibility we carry today to participate in our democracy, organize within our communities and make our voices heard at the ballot box.
This Saturday’s Forum will also address the ongoing Haitian immigration crisis in Ohio, including the treatment of Haitian immigrants and concerns surrounding actions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). As Haitian families face uncertainty and increased scrutiny, we must continue to stand for policies rooted in dignity, justice and humanity.
The struggle for freedom has never ended with one generation. From Haiti’s fight for independence to the American Civil Rights Movement, progress has always depended on ordinary people recognizing that they have a role to play. Freedom requires participation, and today that participation includes civic engagement, coalition building, community advocacy and exercising our right to vote.
We will also use this Saturday’s gathering to stand in solidarity with communities beyond our borders, as the Forum supports relief efforts for the people of Colombia and Indonesia following the tragic earthquakes that have devastated both nations. Our commitment to justice and human dignity does not stop at national boundaries. When communities are hurting, we have a responsibility to respond.
